Smithsonian

As designer, I was responsible for preparing sketches, elevations, location plans, construction documents, sign schedules & standards manuals for wayfinding programs. Wow, that’s a mouthful. A strong attention to detail and some serious Illustrator and Photoshop skills were cultivated during this time.

As the most visited Smithsonian museum (with 4.2 million visits in 2019), the historic National Museum of Natural History presented an interesting challenge in wayfinding. Built in 1910, installation of modern day signage needed careful planning to preserve the historic building surfaces. Henry, the 11-ton African elephant provides the landmark, “starting point” for visitors in the rotunda.
